I recently heard some of Morrissey’s more recent songs and it was nice to see him staying overtly political. The Smith’s were the first to tell me that Meat is Murder … and I’m now vegan.

In My Love, I’d Do Anything for You (lyrics), he begins:

Teach your kids to recognize and to despise all the propaganda
Filtered down by the dead echelons mainstream media

And in Spent the Day in Bed, he takes on news, propaganda and capitalism (lyrics):

Stop watching the news
Because the news contrives to frighten you
To make you feel small and alone
To make you feel that your mind isn’t your own

And all of this reflects this really outstanding animation on Manufacturing Consent via OpenCulture (an excellent site). Here’s “The Five Filters of the Mass Media Machine“, narrated by Amy Goodman:

Watching the animation, highlights to the viewer that Manufacturing Consent predated social media. Now, Facebook is selling access to our lives to advertisers … and political propagandists such as Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, Cambridge Analytica and thousands of others.
